Tiny Birch’s one to four week residencies are geared for artists to explore new ideas or expand current work. A residency at Tiny Birch is a time to create; it’s also a time for artists to consider how their work engages with the history of its medium and how it intersects with questions of meaning and purpose.

Tiny Birch is designed to host one resident or two in collaboration. We seek applications from artists whose work has significantly contributed to their artistic field or is poised to do so. Tiny Birch welcomes applications from both emerging and established artists in the fields of visual art, sculpture, performance, site-specific installations, land art, textile, placemaking as well as writers and artistic researchers, amongst others. Artists should be self-motivated so they can be productive in the isolation afforded by a residency. They must also be open to sharing insights with audiences about their work and processes.

Artists-in-residence are provided housing with 24/7 access to a study. The residency has a weekly fee for accepted participants. We do not insist on a final product at the end of the residency, however artists are welcome to donate works into the residency’s Flat File Program. This program intends to showcase alumni work in future events such as exhibitions. While here, artists-in-residence are encouraged to give a virtual workshop, talk, or a public presentation or performance. (All 2021 programming will be adjusted as needed following Covid-19 restrictions.)

Residencies are partially filled by applications submitted to an open call. For the 2020 and 2021 residency cycles, at least one selected artist will also be extended an invitation to participate in the residency.
