"At the core, my work attempts to critically examine America’s definition of success, and how that perception generates delusional expectations. My work addresses the ridiculousness and impossibility of achieving success and the effect it has on our sense of self. Aesthetically, I construct uncanny spaces (virtual and physical) to highlight exaggerated consumerism. I use personal narratives mixed with cultural rituals to understand why we hate our bodies, spend money we don’t have, shout into the internet and cry at reality television.
I plan to use the space, especially the access to the wood shop to assist in developing sculptures for a solo exhibition I have in early spring. I am looking to build augmented office furniture that will represent the balancing act between being ourselves and playing by the rules. In addition to the sculptural pieces I will develop content for video pieces that represent subversive cultures in workspaces using language found in work emails and video calls." - Lea Devon Sorrentino
